Canon is currently undergoing a massive evolution. They are moving away from traditional DSLR cameras and fully embracing the Mirrorless future. This means there are two entirely different physical mounts you must understand.

The EF Era (DSLR)

The legendary mount used since 1987. These lenses are plentiful and can be found cheap on the used market.

The Golden Adapter Rule: You CAN easily adapt old EF lenses to new RF mirrorless cameras using an adapter (and they work flawlessly). But you CANNOT put a new RF lens on an old EF DSLR camera.

2. The Hierarchy: Chasing the Red Ring

Canon makes it very easy to identify their professional, top-tier lenses. You just have to look for the color of the ring painted on the end of the lens barrel.

Consumer / STM

$ – Budget Friendly

No colored ring (or sometimes a silver ring). Built with heavy use of plastics to keep weight and cost down. They lack weather sealing but offer incredibly sharp optics for the price.

L-Series (Luxury)

$$$ – Professional Grade

Identified by the iconic Red Ring. These are built like tanks, fully weather-sealed against dust and rain, feature ultra-fast autofocus motors, and deliver the highest possible image quality.

ISImage Stabilization. Optical elements inside the lens shift to compensate for your hand shaking. Crucial for video and low light.
USMUltrasonic Motor. Canon’s fastest, most powerful autofocus motor, used primarily in their professional L-Series lenses.
STMStepping Motor. A very quiet and smooth autofocus motor, designed specifically to prevent autofocus noise from ruining video recordings.
DODiffractive Optics (Green Ring). Specialized, highly compact telephoto lenses that use diffractive gratings to reduce size and weight.
