There is absolutely zero difference between a .jpg and a .jpeg file. The only reason “.jpg” exists is because older Windows operating systems (like MS-DOS and Windows 95) had a strict 3-letter limit for file extensions. Mac and Linux didn’t have this limit, so they used “.jpeg”. Today, both extensions act identically.

2. RAW vs JPEG: The Kitchen Metaphor

To truly understand the difference between shooting RAW and JPEG, think of your camera as a professional kitchen.

The Raw Ingredients

A RAW file contains the unprocessed, uncompressed data straight from the camera sensor. It looks flat, dull, and lacks contrast right out of the camera.

Why? Because it’s not a finished meal yet. It holds all the original ingredients (massive dynamic range and color data) waiting for YOU (the chef) to cook it in Lightroom or Photoshop.

The Baked Meal

A JPEG file is a finished, compressed product. The camera’s internal computer takes the raw data, applies color, contrast, and sharpening, and then throws away the remaining data to save space.

The Catch: The camera baked the cake for you. It looks great immediately and is ready to share. But if it’s overcooked (overexposed), you cannot un-bake it.

3. The Data Difference (Why RAW is King for Editing)

When you edit a photo, you are pushing and pulling data. If the data isn’t there, the image breaks apart (banding, noise, blown-out skies). Here is how the numbers stack up:

  • You want to future-proof your absolute best shots.

✅ Shoot in JPEG When:

  • You are shooting sports/journalism and need fast burst rates.
  • You need to deliver images instantly to a client or social media.
  • You are low on SD card storage space.
  • You are shooting casual family photos with no intention to edit.
