In the Exposure Triangle, Shutter Speed is the most dynamic setting. It is the physical curtain in front of your camera sensor. How long that curtain stays open determines two crucial things: exactly how much light hits the sensor, and how motion is recorded.

Fractions of a second matter. The mechanical blades open and close in milliseconds.

1. Freezing vs. Blurring (Interactive Concept)

To stop a speeding car or a bird in flight, you need a shutter speed of 1/1000s or faster. The sensor is exposed for such a short time that the subject has no time to move across the pixels. Conversely, a slow shutter speed (like 1/5s) allows moving objects to drag across the frame, creating beautiful motion blur.

2. The Two Golden Rules

Whether you shoot stills or video, professionals adhere to specific mathematical rules to ensure footage is neither accidentally blurry nor artificially choppy.

📷 The Reciprocal Rule (Photography)

To avoid “camera shake” (blurry photos from your hands trembling), your shutter speed should never be slower than your focal length.

Example: If you are using your Sony 50mm lens, your minimum shutter speed should be 1/50s (or 1/80s on your APS-C crop sensor). Any slower, and you need a tripod.

🎬 The 180° Rule (Cinematography)

To achieve natural, cinematic motion blur in video, your shutter speed must always be exactly double your frame rate.

Example: If you shoot at 24fps, your shutter speed must be locked at 1/48s (or 1/50s). If you shoot 60fps slow-mo, lock it at 1/120s.

3. The Technical Trade-Off

Because shutter speed controls light, increasing it to freeze action (e.g., 1/2000s) means very little light hits the sensor. To compensate and maintain a proper exposure, you are forced to rely on the other two pillars of the Exposure Triangle: you must either open your Aperture (f/1.8) or raise your ISO (introducing digital noise).
