1. The Big Two: Autofocus vs. Manual Focus

Every modern lens has a small switch on the side labeled AF / MF. This is your master control.

Autofocus (AF)

The camera’s computer and the lens motor work together to find contrast and lock onto the subject automatically. You will use this 95% of the time.

Manual Focus (MF)

You turn the physical ring on the lens with your hand to achieve focus. When to use it: Astrophotography (stars in the dark), extreme macro photography, or when shooting video smoothly.

2. The Autofocus Trinity (When things move)

If you leave your camera on Autofocus, you must tell it how the subject is behaving. Is it standing still, or is it running? Brands use different names, but there are only three main modes:

Sony / Nikon: AF-S Canon: One-Shot

Single Autofocus (For Still Subjects)

How it works: You half-press the shutter button. The camera focuses once, beeps, and locks. If the subject moves after the beep, they will be out of focus.

Best For: Landscapes, architecture, studio portraits, and still life.

Sony / Nikon: AF-C Canon: AI Servo

Continuous Autofocus (For Moving Subjects)

How it works: You half-press and hold the shutter button. The camera never stops focusing. It constantly tracks the subject as it moves closer or further away from you.

Best For: Sports, wildlife, running children, and cars.

Sony / Nikon: AF-A Canon: AI Focus

Automatic Autofocus (The Hybrid)

How it works: The camera guesses. It starts in Single mode, but if it detects the subject moving, it automatically switches to Continuous mode. (Pro Tip: Professionals rarely use this because it can sometimes guess wrong).

Best For: Absolute beginners or unpredictable casual events.

3. Focus Areas: Where should the camera look?

Now that the camera knows how to focus, you must tell it where to look inside the frame.

Wide / Auto Area

The camera looks at the entire frame and chooses what to focus on (usually the closest object or a recognized face). Great for vlogging, bad for shooting through fences or crowds.

Single Point / Spot

You manually move a single tiny square exactly where you want it (like a person’s eye). This gives you 100% precise control over the focus point. Used by professionals constantly.
